How do the different channel types work?
This page helps explain how channels work by comparing them to rooms in a big house. It gives clear details about three types of channels: public, private visible, and private hidden. Here you will find out about joining channels, what users can do within each type, and the job of channel administrators.
There are three types of channels on 115.1:
Public channels: Open for everyone to join and post in.
Private, visible channels: People can see but need permission to join them.
Private, hidden channels: Only people with an invitation can find and join these channels.
An analogy with rooms
Imagine a mansion with many rooms, where each room represents a different channel on 115.1. The doors and windows show how easy it is for users to join and see these channels. The people in the rooms are like members in a channel.
Public channels: These rooms have open doors and windows, allowing anyone to find, enter and interact with others inside. The sign on the door indicates the channel topic and encourages users to join the conversation. People can also peek through the windows to see what’s happening without entering the room.
Private, visible channels: These rooms have locked doors and no windows. Signs outside describe the room’s purpose. Users can view the door and understand its purpose, but must request permission from the channel administrator to enter. After gaining access, they can interact with others inside the room. Keep in mind that without windows, the channel’s content remains invisible to those outside.
Private, hidden channels: These rooms have locked doors and no windows, but there’s no sign on the door, and the door is invisible. This means you can’t enter the room without a personal invitation from the channel administrator. Only invited people can access the room and its contents. Like private, visible channels, these rooms also lack windows to ensure privacy.
New users
When someone new joins 115.1, it’s as if they have been brought into the mansion and personally guided into the private rooms that the person who invited them already has access to. They can enter those rooms without asking for permission from the channel administrator because the person who invited them has vouched for them. However, if they wish to enter other private rooms later, they must obtain permission from the respective channel administrators, just like everyone else.
Can people be removed from a channel?
Yes, channel administrators act as key holders and can remove members from a channel at any time, essentially escorting them out of the room and locking the door behind them.
